4 Important Questions to Ask Yourself Before Replacing Your Gutters

Now that fall is here, it’s a good idea to check over the exterior of your home to see what needs repair or replacing before another Minnesota winter.

If it has been some time now since you have checked your gutters, it most likely is time to give them a close look before our next season. A gutter system that works properly provides  excellent drainage that maintains the home’s structural integrity. You need to be sure your gutters are both tough and functional, since they need to work together with your roofing system to redirect elements and runoff away from the house.

At times a simple repair is all that’s needed.  Sometimes you need to let your old gutters retire by replacing them with new ones. However, ask yourself these four questions before replacing your gutters.

How old are my existing gutters?
Lifespan of gutters depends greatly on their material and how much maintenance has been done. Life expectancy of aluminum gutters, according to ATD Home Inspection, is somewhere between 20-25 years. With proper repair and upkeep, homeowners can maximize the service life of their gutters. Some ways you ways for you to preserve your gutters’ aesthetics and utility is by cleaning them regularly and looking for any signs of decay and clogging.

Do I see signs of water damage?
The principal job of residential gutters is providing drainage and redirection of precipitation that is efficient. If you begin to see water trail on exterior walls, something is wrong. Leaking in corners, water coming out from behind the gutters, and overflow and water staining are all signs that your home’s gutters are malfunctioning. Check further to see whether the gutters are loose or clogged.  If not, it may be time for gutter replacement.

Are any gutter fasteners damaged?
If your gutters are loosely hanging away from your roof or are turning down, there is something wrong. If identified early, repair is an option. However, if they are already pulling at the seams or hanging from your house, replacement is inevitable. To avoid detachment in the future, be sure all screws and clips are fastened securely.

What other deterioration is observable?
Since your gutters re the main system for water drainage, they collect lots of water, debris, among other elements. If your gutters over time have become corroded badly with leaks, rotting, and splitting, they need replacing. If not treated, warps or gaps may occur to your gutters that can cause water to flow over the roofing system’s side, causing damage to your exterior and interior structures.
