Are Your Windows As Safe As Possible?

One of the main concerns of homeowners in the Minneapolis metro is that of safety. We lock our doors and teach our kids how to be safe, but are the windows in your home up to par? If they don’t meet these three requirements, it’s time to replace the old windows.

Are The Easy to Open From Inside?
my13a1In case of fire or other disaster, every member of the household must be able to open the nearest window easily in order to escape as soon as possible. In fact, building codes require at least one escape window in a room before it can be considered a bedroom.

Do Your Windows Stay Up?
Being able to open the window easily is just as important as that same window staying open. Older double-hung windows have the tendency to eventually lose their stability when the lower sash is pushed open.  Now that spring is here, it’s a good time to go around and check how well your windows stay open.

It hurts when that sash comes crashing down on little fingers or hands, and there’s nothing worse than when your child is suffering. Faulty windows also pose a danger to pets if they enjoy sitting on the sill during warm spring and summer days. There’s no need to worry about any of these unfortunate outcomes when your windows are in good working order.

Are Your Windows Providing Security From Intruders?
The final, and arguably one of the most important, reasons you should have secure windows is as protection against burglars or home invasions. Windows are often seen as the least secure parts of the house because the majority of people lock their doors, but they may neglect the windows.  Make sure that you have a sturdy, well working lock on all of your windows, especially the easily accessible ones on the lower level. Remember to close and lock them when you leave the house, too.

The right windows do a lot more for your home than just provide light and ventilation.  When you’re sure the windows in your home are functioning as well as possible, you can rest easily.  As a part of your spring cleaning, check all your windows over; any that aren’t working well should be repaired or replaced.
