Beautifully Clean Windows Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal: Tips to Do It Right

Now that it looks like warmer weather is here, homeowners all over the Twin Cities are getting outdoors and cleaning up their homes after winter.  One common spring task is window cleaning.  Clean windows really make your home look sharp, so we’ve got some tips to help you.

Having that beautiful cleaned up appearance does much more than give you a clear window to view the world.  Getting the job done also boosts your home’s curb appeal. Cleaning your windows is one of the steps that are needed for maintaining them. When you polish them up nicely, your windows almost sparkle, and you’ll love the way the home looks overall. So will those passing by.

Tips for Window Cleaning

Soak the Windows – Soaking the windows with a water and mild soap mix can help you reduce the amount of scrubbing that you will have to put into the window cleaning. Elbow grease goes a long way but if you can cut back on the effort, you’ll be happier.  Soak then scrub.

Plan for the Sun – Sunshine is going to happen, no matter where you are in your home, and where it hits depends on the time. Clean the windows from the outside and then the inside, when the sun is not directly hitting them. If the sun hits the windows while you clean them, it leaves streaks on the outside. It is unsightly and it doesn’t really get them as clean as they should be. Cloudy days with no rain in the forecast are perfect days to clean your windows.

Know Your Windows – Make sure to know what type of windows that you have in order to properly clean them. Do you have to remove the screens or storms? Can you tilt the windows in and clean the exterior from inside your home?  Get familiar with your windows before you get your cleaning solution ready.

Gently Clean Around Screens – Screens can be touchy, so you will want to make sure to be gentle with them. You should always make sure to rinse them off but never push on them. Some even prefer to vacuum the screen with a hose extension to completely remove the dust. If removable, a simple rinse with a hose is often enough, but make sure the hose nozzle is set for gentle.

Don’t Forget the Window Tracks – This step is often overlooked. Use a vacuum hose to suck up dust and dry debris BEFORE you start washing, otherwise you’ll have wet muck.  Then once you’re washing the glass, you can use a toothbrush, bottle brush, or other implement to scrub out any dirt in the window tracks.

Wipe Down the Trim – As long as you’re in cleaning mode, once you have finished with the window itself, take some time to clean the trim around the window.  And if you’ve got accessories outside like shutters or window boxes, clean those at the same time.

Taking the time to clean your windows should be something you do several times a year. We recommend at least every spring and fall.  You need to make sure that you’re cleaning them well to maintain them properly. A dirty window is not a window anyone wants in their home, and dirty windows often have issues with operation.  Clean windows show the world you care about your home.
