The Benefits of Irregularly Shaped Windows for a Minneapolis Home

If we say ‘window,’ chances are you’re picturing something rectangular or somewhat box-shaped, right?  That’s not the wrong mind picture – and in fact it’s the most common window configuration here in the Minneapolis area – but there is so much more available in terms of window shapes.

Most people go with standard square or rectangular windows, but sometimes it’s the unusual items like a specialty shape window that add the most appeal to a home.

That’s why many of the homeowners we work with today are going for less standard windows and more unique shapes. Those windows stand out compared to all the basic window shapes that people are used to, and they offer some unique benefits as well.

Maximize Your Odd Space:  In irregularly shaped rooms, like those in an attic gable, a specialty shape window might be the best for maximizing light and air in the space that you have. A triangle window, for instance, will use up space in a area with slanted ceilings much more effectively than any other shape possibly could.

Unify All the Different Window Types: If you want to go with different styles of windows around your home it’s a good idea to try and figure out a way to unify them. This is especially true when you combine styles up in the same room. Adding a unique geometric window above all the other windows is a sneaky way to tie them all together. Adding a small half-round window above a pair of casement windows flanking a picture window will make them look like they belong.

Get as Much Light in as Possible: The right shaped window can bring in much more light than a standard window might be able to. Going back to that attic example, it’s possible to bring in more light with a triangle window than it is with a square window, because you can fill most of the area with glass.  Not to mention that it just looks better to use a shape that fits properly. If you have a small space, an odd shaped window can really help open it up for you.

Bring in Light at the Door: Many homes today simply don’t have the space for sidelights installed at either side of their entry door. But that doesn’t mean this space has to be dark or closed off. Adding a geometric window up above the door itself is a simple way to bring in more light.  This is another area where a half-round window works well. The window will also make the door seem taller and create a more grand entrance for you.

Add a Focal Point: A great way to make your home stand out from the others on the block is to add a unique focal point.  Round and oval windows are perfect for this purpose.  They are often used in a stairwell where they can add some additional light as well.  Take a look at the photo above – we installed this octagonal window as part of an exterior remodeling project.  Not only does the window add some visual interest, it brings light into what would otherwise be a dark corner at the base of their stairs.

Here are some more tips for choosing custom or irregularly shaped windows for your home.  If you’re looking for a little inspiration, check out our Pinterest board, Specialty Window Shapes.
