Benefits to Expect from Replacing Your Windows

Owning a home can be an expensive though rewarding endeavor.   Part of home ownership is periodic repair or replacement of components which no longer look or work the way they were intended to.  If you own an older home, one of those components is your windows.  Expense is a concern for many property owners when they consider window replacement; upgrading your windows, however, is one improvement that will pay back up to 80% on your investment in terms of increased home value, and even more when you consider the potential energy savings.

If you stay in your home for a number of years afterward, those windows can actually pay for themselves in terms of reduced heating and cooling bills.  According to the US Department of Energy, half of the homes the US still have single pane windows, which are not energy efficient. By upgrading, you also cut your cooling and heating costs between 10% and 15%. Those savings really add up, when you consider that the most American households spends about $1000 per year heating and cooling their homes.

Better Insulation
There are more options for highly insulated windows on the market today than there have been in years past. Low–e windows, or low emissivity coated windows, block infrared light and improves insulation that way. Today, some windows have a triple layer of coating, which creates the same protection as three panes of glass.

Windows with gas between the panes are also gaining popularity. Carbon dioxide, argon, and krypton aremthe common gases used between windowpanes to add more warmth by reducing heat transference.

The National Fenestration Rating Council assigned what’s called a U-factor to each new window. The lower this rating is, the more energy efficient a window is.

Maintenance
Scraping, painting, and caulking window panes isn’t a job that most people enjoy doing. Your charming old home has windows that require this work on a semi regular basis to maintain proper insulation.

Modern windows takes substantially less maintenance, if any at all. In addition to being easy to care for, they come in many different shapes and sizes to fit any home, regardless of if it’s new or old. This means that you can spend more time enjoying your windows and less time caring for them.

Replacing windows is a smart investment, in terms of both money and time saved.  And when you consider
