How to Bring Charm to Your Minneapolis Home’s Exterior

Here in the Minneapolis area – just like other places across the country – most homeowners want their houses to look the best they can.  If yours could use a little help, it doesn’t have to be a major exterior remodeling project. Just small additions can make a difference when you’re trying to add a bit of charm to it.

When it comes to enhancing the way the outside of your home looks, it is important to note that you should not completely change its overall appearance. You can instead add a touch or two throughout the exterior to make it stand out more.

Add These Touches To Improve Your Home’s Exterior Appearance

Covered Entrance:  Adding a covered entry to the front of your home can provide you with a way to keep guests out of the rain while also adding a bit more character to your home.

You might opt for a long covered porch, which is a little more involved.  Or you could just have a gable roof added over the door. They are relatively inexpensive to add, which means more saved in your pocket and an easy change made. Having a covered front entry also gives you more decorating options.

Lanterns, Pendant Lights, or Sconces:  Just by hanging a lantern in the front of your home, you can change the overall appearance of it. Choose something that works with the era of your home and make it stand out within the walls. If you have a white home, choosing a charcoal black lantern can make it stand out and also add beauty.  An elegant brick home might look great with a glass and brass pendant light over the front entry.

Replace the Front Door: Changing the front door is easy to do, and you have so many options to go with. One of the most popular right now is adding a vividly colored door.  Pella has some gorgeous choices, as do some of the other exterior door manufacturers.  And you can really class things up by adding sidelights and/or transom windows over the door.  But as you’re considering entry doors, go with something that works with the house and is not over the top.  You also want a front door that is welcoming and safe at the same time.  By the way, replacing your front door remains one of the top remodeling projects in terms of delivering an increase in the value of your home that’s close to its cost.

Window Boxes and Shutters:  Add window boxes outside the windows for a cute appeal around the home. You’re able to make it stand out much more than it would have before. You can then feel better about the changes that you made when you see the flowers bloom in bright colors and make your windows stand out more.  And window boxes aren’t just for flowers – you can use them for seasonal arrangements as well, such as spruce greens and holly in winter.  Shutters are often added in conjunction with window boxes.  They really frame a window beautifully.  For some inspiration, check out our Pinterest board.
