Choosing Your Window Style for Each Room in Your Home

Homeowners that are buying new windows shouldn’t just consider the type of home that they have when choosing window styles, but also the area of the home that the windows are going in. What works best in the bedroom may not work as well in a bathroom or kitchen. That’s why it’s important to really think about which window styles are best for each part of the home.

Window Style Suggestions by Room

The Kitchen: Kitchens require regular ventilation and lots of natural light to be enjoyable. That’s why casement windows are often the most popular option recommended for this area of the home. If there is a walking path nearby to the kitchen then double hung windows are a good second option that still offers excellent ventilation and decent light.

You can also check out our Kitchen Window Looks board on Pinterest for some great inspiration.

The Bedroom: The very best style of window for a bedroom is one that fits the space well and offers light and ventilation. Bay windows are popular for small rooms to open up the space, picture windows are popular in modern homes looking for an architectural element, and double hung windows are popular for standard performance.

The Bathroom: In a bathroom, you’re looking for light, ventilation, and privacy. That’s why many people prefer something like a skylight that’s not going to offer a view into the room. Transom windows are another popular option, but many homeowners decide to go with double hung or bay windows with a special finish that obscures the view into the room while allowing light in.

You might also opt for a specialty shape window like the one shown here from Pella, if your window is placed high enough to allow light in and privacy isn’t compromised. (Pella recently shared this photo on their Facebook page, and we loved the look so much we had to show you.)

The Dining Room: Dining rooms don’t rely on natural light as much, so it’s best to go with simple and straightforward windows here. Casement windows or double hung both work well. A bay window can help open up your space more and give you a ledge to work with if you want some storage in the room.

The Living Room: The living room is likely the largest room of your home, so go big to make it a very grand location to be in. Garden windows, bay windows or bow windows all show off the space nicely.

Casement windows are another fun option that creates one solid window for you to look through without those pesky middle frame pieces to deal with.

An Office: Offices are home to computers and that means glare reduction is very important. Bay windows help open up smaller spaces and even offer space for a small desk or a shelf covered in games. Windows with a low-E treatment will reduce the glare in the room, providing a more pleasant computing experience.
