Current Residential Home Trends

The state of the economy and financial pressures continues to play a big role in homeowner decisions.  Uncertainty in the housing market has made remodeling and renovation of existing homes more attractive than buying a different home or building a new one.  Some of the trends discussed at the annual International Builders’ Show included:

  • Smaller, smaller, smaller.  In many areas lot sizes are shrinking, as are the overall size of new homes.  Making spaces more workable rather than larger is the trend.
  • Home designs and profiles fitting in with existing styles rather than standing out. Rather than the overall architectural feel of a home being a way for the owner to express personal taste, other areas such as color, trim, siding profiles, etc. are becoming more important.
  • Seamless connections between indoor and outdoor living.  Decks, patios, and outdoor living spaces are becoming more and more a part of the overall home function.  Indoor rooms such as four-season porches lead to patios, and rooms adjacent to outdoor living areas incorporate touches such as brick or stone which reflect the outdoor decor.
  • The importance of the master suite is rising.  More homeowners are looking for master bedroom areas which reflect a hotel or resort-like feel.  Large, open bathrooms with soaker tubs and sitting areas are becoming popular.  Some new homes are now including two master bedroom areas.  These designs are especially popular with retirees, providing comfortable guest accomodations.
  • Do-It-All rooms.  These rooms (or sometimes just spaces) are usually located between the kitchen and the dining area.  Operating as a “command central” for the home, do-it-all rooms include such things as desk space, butler’s pantry, wine storage, etc.  In some homes they are simply enlarged laundry rooms; in others they have everything from hobby spaces to media carousels.

Whether you’re building or improving your home, look for timeless quality and workmanship, whether your aim is to fit in with current housing trends or stand out from the crowd.  Whatever you choose, Window Outfitters wants you to love your home.  If we can help, give us a call.
