Easy Steps for a Front Door Makeover

The most important feature on the front of your face?  Well, that might vary depending on the individual, but most people notice the eyes first.  With the exterior of a home, it’s usually the front door.  

Are you playing up your home’s best feature, or could it use a makeover?  Sometimes the answer is having a new entry door installed, but if your door is still in good shape, here are some ideas you can use to really make that front entry area stand out.

Easy Front Door Decor Ideas

• Add a coat of colored paint:  Who says doors have to be brown, tan, or other neutral?  A vividly-colored front door is one of the top trends right now.  You might choose an already-finished colored door from companies like Pella, but a simple fix if you’ve still got a great front door is to paint it.  A gallon of paint isn’t a big investment, and if you don’t like the color, it’s easy to change.  (Keep in mind that not every type of door material will take paint well, so check with the door manufacturer before you get out the paintbrush).  Lipstick red remains a favorite, but canary yellow and bright blue are also popular.  For some color inspiration, visit our Pinterest page on colored doors.  Be sure to select a color that looks good with your siding.
• Update your door hardware:  Sometimes all a front door needs to freshen it up is some new hardware.  Shiny brass can actually show your home off.  Add a kickplate at the bottom and coordinating accessories.  Why not switch out your doorknob for a lever?  They are easier to open.  You can even add a door knocker. Choose door hardware that has the same finish and basic style.
• Light up your entry:  A well-lit front door is attractive, plus sufficient lighting makes it safer in many ways.  Your visitors are less likely to trip on the stairs and having your front door area illuminated discourages burglars.  Did you know that the majority of home burglaries are through the front door?  Good lighting will make it less likely at your home.  If you’ve got the room, add a sconce or other light on each side of your door.  If your entry is covered, a single hanging pendant could look elegant.  But whatever you choose, make sure it’s a style and finish that coordinates with your door hardware.
• Don’t forget the extras:  Just like jewelry finishes off a woman’s outfit, little extras around your front door can dress it up.  Consider adding things like larger house numbers, a painted mailbox, decorative trim around the door, and an attractive mat.  If you’ve got the space, containers with seasonal arrangements can make a door inviting.  And don’t forget the door decorations, like wreaths and swags.
