Four Sure Signs Your Minnesota Siding Needs Replacement

Recent hail storms here in the Minneapolis area caused exterior damage to many homes, with siding in particular getting hit hard.

Damage to siding from hail is usually easy to spot, and once it’s been storm damaged it needs to be replaced, at least in sections.  And sometimes the home is in such a state that it needs to be completely re-sided.  But it’s not always simple to tell when it’s time for new siding.

Is Your Siding Failing?

Siding is one of the most important coverings for your home, and when it starts to fail it’s important that you take the time to make a replacement as soon as possible. Below are four common symptoms of failing siding for you to look for. Keep an eye out for each of the following issues and when you see one or more of them you’ll know to start researching your siding options and trying to decide on what you’ll do next.

  • Your Energy Bills Are Creeping Up: High energy bills can be a sign of many problems in your home, but one common one is failing insulation. Another is loose siding that is letting in outside air. If you’re suffering from increasingly large energy bills, you may want to switch to more efficient siding, such as an insulated vinyl option. The right siding – when installed with proper insulation – can reduce heat leakage to the outside world.
  • Interior Water Spots and Damage: Water spots and damage on the interior walls of your home are serious indicators of failing siding, windows or roofing. It’s vital to figure out what the source of the water is and take care of it soon to prevent serious damage from occurring. Aging siding is often a culprit behind water showing up where it shouldn’t be. Usually putting in a high-quality replacement siding is the best method to get remove this problem and bring a home back to good health.
  • Visible Cracks and Holes: Many signs of aging siding are subtle, but not this one. If you notice holes or major cracks in your siding, it’s time to make a replacement. It’s important to look over all your siding though, and decide if the problem is due to age, or a freak accident such as the severe weather we just had, a rogue baseball or something else. Localized problems can be fixed on the spot, but siding that’s cracking because of age will continue cracking in new locations even if you swap the broken spots.
  • You’re Painting Siding Often: If your paintable siding is chipping, cracking and requires painting every year or two, chances are good that it’s reached the end of its road. You should only have to refinish that siding once every five years or so, and when it’s much more frequent than that you want to look at an alternative.

Make sure to also look for these common Minnesota siding issues, as well.

Siding will only last so long, and eventually you’re going to have to replace it. When you run into these problems consider replacing your existing siding with a quality product from Window Outfitters. We have several options available.
