How to Get Your House Ready to Handle Another Minnesota Winter

Winter is a rough season for any home here in the Minneapolis area, and it’s something that you really need to prepare for to get through without any problems.

That’s why it’s important to take the time to do proper maintenance before it gets too cold out.

Here’s an overview of the most important maintenance tasks that you should complete this month before the temperature dips too much. Look into what the Minneapolis home contractors have to say about it.

Minnesota Home Winterization Tasks

Even though we’ve had some wintry weather lately, it’s still early and you’ve got time to take care of things you may not have done yet.  Here are some of the more important ones.

  • Insulation and Seals are Important:  Proper insulation keeps your home nice and warm and keeps your heating bill down in the winter. It’s important to be sure that your home is sealed up as tight as possible. That means sealing around windows, checking attic insulation, sealing up foundation and wall cracks and closing up any other entrances into your home. Here is why replacing old windows before the dead of winter might be a good idea.
  • Examine the Roof: Winter is tough on your roof and could cause leaks to enter into your home if it isn’t properly treated. Look over your roof to be sure that there are no missing shingles or cracks anywhere. Also verify that the downspouts and gutters are clear so that they can function properly.  In fact, a professional roof inspection might be a good idea.
  • HVAC Inspection: Your HVAC system is vitally important in the winter, and if you don’t have it inspected before the cold comes you could find yourself with some serious problems before you know it. Do yourself a favor and get a technician over to your house as soon as possible to do some maintenance and make sure that everything is working properly.
  • Miscellaneous: There are plenty of little tasks that should all be done before winter arrives. Disconnect that garden house and be sure that the line is shut off for the winter. Flip over your ceiling and attic fan if you are able to, to direct hot air back down into your home. Replace the batteries in all your fire detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Also consider stocking up on supplies for your humidifier if you use one in the winter.

It takes time to prepare for winter, and some professional knowledge as well. Don’t make the mistake of trying to handle all the maintenance tasks for your home. Instead hire professionals for specific jobs that you simply don’t want to deal with yourself. This saves you time and leaves you with a home that is more ready for winter to come.
