Installing New Windows? Don’t Forget the Permit!

You may think installing energy-efficient replacement windows is expensive, but they’re always a smarter investment than many shorter term options. With your budget in mind, it can be tempting to try cutting costs wherever possible. When it comes to installing windows, though, skipping the permit process could end up costing you much more in the long run.

Keep Your Home Safe

At first glance, permits may seem to be just another way to take money from homeowners, but in reality they’re a way to ensure a safe remodel. Not only do they provide a record of work done, but it’s another layer of assurance you’re getting quality work.

Sometimes a remodeling contractor asks the homeowner to obtain the permit.  That should be a red flag.  (The only exception would be if the window installation were part of a larger remodeling project and the window installation contractor wasn’t handling the other work.)

When a contractor refuses to pull a permit, it’s often a mark of someone who may not be willing to do the work needed to ensure proper installation. That could result in problems like leaking windows, higher energy bills, water damage, or worse. If you’re replacing your windows because they can no longer stand up to the drastic Minnesota winter, poor installation can put you right back where you started.

Beyond improper installation, not getting the proper permits at the start of a job can result in financial problems like fines, and extra money spent if the inspection requires the work to be taken out in order to examine something not evident upon first glance.  In addition, if the work isn’t done according to building code, you might have to pay to have it redone.

You may also pay in frustration on many levels. Rework and extra money paid in fees alone are irritating enough, but when it comes time to sell your home, you may run into problems there, as well. Many areas require proof of proper permits before a sale can take place. If you don’t have that proof, that will prolong the sales process and could even lead to additional work being done before you could sell.

The best way to avoid all of this is to make sure a permit is pulled before beginning of the job. If you’re working with a contractor, ask right away if they take care of the permit process.  Here at Window Outfitters, we are a licensed Minnesota home remodeling contractor, and we take care of that part for our customers to help ensure a smooth and high quality process.
