The Many Different Styles of Minnesota Replacement Windows

Thinking about replacing your windows this year?  That’s a great decision.  But it’s just the first one to make.

Adding new windows to your home isn’t just about making it more functional or efficient. The right replacement windows can up the style factor of your home as well and make you feel good about your space. At Window Outfitters, we offer a wide variety of window styles for you to choose from. Below are some of our popular window style types and what each one has to offer. Look through them and choose the style that’s going to offer you the most benefits overall.

Our Most Popular Window Styles

Marvin Awning Windows

Awning Windows:  Awning windows open outwards with a hinge up top to form an awning. They work really well during rainy conditions and they let fresh air in exceedingly well since you are making use of the entire space of the window.

Awning windows are perfect for smaller spaces and in areas where it might be hard to reach to slide a double-hung window up.  They are also a great way to add some ventilation beneath a picture window, like the configuration shown right.  (Photo courtesy of Marvin Windows.)

Single Hung Windows: Single hung windows are basic and easy to use. They are split into two window sections, but only the bottom raises up for ventilation. They’re generally more affordable than double hung. They are perfect for areas where a lot of ventilation isn’t necessary.  This style is a common choice for garage windows.

Double Hung Windows: Double hung windows feature two sections, and each one moves up and down. This is the most popular style window.  The two section gives you more control over your ventilation options and make them easier to clean. You can maximize ventilation by opening the top and bottom at once.

Bay Windows: Add additional space to your home with a bay window that extends your space out of the side of your home creating a nice shelf or ledge. Large bay windows even create lounge space.  They’re a great spot for a window seat. Bay windows are usually made of three or more panes of glass constructed in an outward shape.  A bay window really adds terrific exterior appeal as well.

Sliding Windows: Also called gliders, sliding windows open up horizontally and have a nice modern look. If you want to avoid reaching up high to open or close a window, horizontal sliding windows make a lot of sense.  And if you’re remodeling your home in light of aging in place, sliding windows are much easier to operate than double hungs or crank-out casement windows.

Fixed Windows: Fixed windows (also called inoperable) don’t move at all making them the best option when you want an energy efficient window. They can’t be used for ventilation and aren’t good for escapes in an emergency either, but they do work well for adding in extra light at an affordable price.  Picture windows are fixed, and often specialty shape windows such as half-rounds above patio doors and transom windows above entry doors are also fixed window types.

A fixed window isn’t necessarily a style but more of a type, since it can be just about any shape – from round to square. Specialty or custom shape windows are most often fixed.

Here are some window styles you can consider for particular areas of your home and reasons to use them.
