Do I Replace All the Windows on My Minnesota Home at Once or Not?

So the early winter cold here in the Twin Cities has revealed you’ve got drafts and cold spots around your windows… You’re facing the reality that it’s time to replace them, but that seems like a large project to take on all at once.  It’s a common dilemma that our Minneapolis area window company often encounters.

Many homeowners wonder if they should replace all of their windows at the same time, or if they should just weed through the ones having problems first and then go to the others later when they have problems. While this seems the most cost-effective, there are many considerations to keep in mind on whether or not this is the best tactic to take.

Cost of Window Replacement:  Cost is one of the biggest factors why so many choose to replace only a handful of windows and not all of them. If you’re only replacing a few due to cost, then make sure you’re working with an affordable and fair-priced contractor for the job. Often times you can get a deal on replacement of all the windows, not just a couple.  And like our Minnesota window company, replacement window contractors often run discounts.

Keep in mind that the labor for installation accounts for a portion of the cost, and there are certain labor costs relative to setting up a job that will be the same whether you’re doing two windows or ten. So in the long run you might be better off price-wise to do them all at once.

Your contractor might be able to help you figure out a more economical solution as well.  For example, we often do jobs where we recommend wood-clad windows for areas like living rooms that get a lot of use and where the interior of the windows will be seen often. But on that same home we’ll recommend less expensive vinyl windows for bathrooms and bedrooms. Those windows will look the same from the outside, but the entire project will be less costly.  Choosing the right replacement windows can make all the difference.

If You’re Considering Replacing Only Some of the Windows

When the time comes to replace windows and you only choose to replace only a few that are not working correctly, there are some things to keep in mind.

You may not like the look of having newer windows with older windows and the same type of window might not be available when it comes time to replace the others. Additionally, you might actually spend less per hour on the installation and at the same time get a heavy discount when you purchase five or more windows to be replaced at once. This is a cost saving that many companies provide when you make it a bigger job.

It is possible to just replace a few windows at a time, but we highly recommend that you go with a decent amount of windows, rather than just one or two, unless that is all that needs to be updated throughout the home.

While not all windows are the same, those new replacement windows are going to function differently from the older ones. And those older windows could still be leaking air or transferring heat, so the new windows might not bring a big energy savings you were expecting if you replace only a few.  Factoring in potential energy savings should be something you do when you evaluate the overall cost.

Whatever you decide to do, it is always ideal to speak with a Minnesota window replacement company about the new windows you’d like to have installed. They can provide you with further information to help you make the most informed decision.
