The Advantages and Disadvantages of Casement Windows

If you’re looking for an easy-to-operate window, it may be time to consider casements.  A lot of windows have a handle or pull that you have to lift up on; casement windows are different because they have a hinge on the side and crank outward. They can be installed over appliances, counters, sinks, or anything else where you might want some fresh air from an easy-to-open window.  Their ease of opening makes them a great choice for older homeowners.

The Advantages of Casement Windows

  • Many Different Designs – Casements have many different designs to choose from such as top down grille, flat top, French, prairie grill, colonial grill, and then ones with no grill. You can even customize the window how you would like it from the color and the size to just about anything else. They come made from wood, clad, steel, vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass.
  • Casements Offer Increased Ventilation – Since they open outward, you’re able to open the window wide allowing more light and ventilation into the room since the entire window is open.
  • Second Most Efficient Type of Window – Fixed pane windows (those that don’t open) are the first when it comes to energy efficiency; these would be the second. When the window is closed, the window sash pushes against the frame, creating a seal that is air-tight against leaks.
  • Easy to Open and Close – Single lever latches on the windows or tandem latches allow you to open and close the windows easily. There are also automatic openers that can be used.

The Disadvantages

  • Limits in Size – Since they do open outwards, you cannot have them too large since they will be heavy and not able to do the job.  The opening has to be strong enough to hold the weight of the window, which means it has to be small enough for the window to be light.
  • Cannot Put Air Conditioners in Them – Since they open outwards, air conditioners are something that cannot be used within these windows.  If you have window air conditioners, double-hung or single-hung windows are your only choice.
  • No Storm Windows – If you need storm windows then this would not be the best choice. The windows are not able to accommodate these because the way they crank outward.  However, many casement windows come with screens.
