The Significance of Low E Factor In Replacement Windows

When shopping for new replacement windows for your Minneapolis area, home it is important to consider more than just the price. While up-front cost is often the driving force behind the decision-making process, there are other very important factors to consider as well.

Well-designed and insulated windows will not only keep the weather out, but they will also help reduce your energy bills by keeping the warmed or cooled air inside.  Installing energy efficient windows is almost a given these days.   One factor that contributes to energy efficiency is  “low-emittance” (low-E). A window that has a low E rating is one that has a coating that will reflect the sun’s rays. The thickness of the low E coating and the position in the window will dictate how the window will perform.

For example, when this coating is installed on the third surface of an insulated glass, the Low E coating will reflect the back into the room to help reduce the energy loss during the cold months, thereby reducing heating costs.  When this coating is installed on the second surface of a glass, the Low E coating will reflect or absorb the sun’s heat from the outside, thereby reducing solar gain and cooling costs during the warm months.

These “low-emittance” (low-E) coatings are microscopically thin, virtually invisible, metal or metallic oxide layers deposited on a window surface primarily to reduce the radiating heat flow.  The coating basically interferes with the heat exchange to the outside, so whatever your temperature is inside the home will not be altered that much by the temperature outside the home.  There are a wide variety of low E glass windows available, including triple-paned glass with argon gas in between them, This is an added layer of protection that has a few nice perks of its own.
