Tips for Choosing Your James Hardie Siding Color – Part 2

So…you made the big decision first – deciding to have James Hardie fiber cement siding installed on your home here in the Minneapolis area this year.  Hardie siding comes either ready to paint on site or prefinished with their special ColorPlus® baked-on finish.  (Read more about that in Part 1 of this series.)

Okay, you decided that the prefinished siding is the way to go.  Your next decision? Selecting a color.

If you’ve checked out their website or you’ve seen samples and brochures, you know they have many colors available.  How do you choose the right one?

With these tips from us here at Window Outfitters, you can make choosing the perfect color siding for your home a bit easier.  You can use these ideas for selecting multiple colors of siding if you’re going for a two-tone look or are choosing several styles of siding.  The tips can also be used for selecting trim colors.

Consider These Factors When Selecting a Siding Color

Create a Harmonic Balance

Using a basic color wheel to choose the best color for your home is often the easiest method. By using the divided sections of colors, you can find out which ones are going to provide you with the harmonic balance you’re after. You want the colors to complement one another, as well as the colors of the other houses in your neighborhood.

Choosing analogous colors (the ones next to each other on the wheel) provides a nice balance when it is needed on your home. These colors vary slightly and work well together.

Selecting complementary colors is another way to make use of a color wheel. They have a higher contrast for those that want bolder colors on the side of their home. Choose one of each of these types of colors and create a more serene setting that has visual interest.

Warm or Cool Colors for Your Home?

There are two tones on the color wheel – warm and cool. You can choose which one you might want for the siding on your home. This can narrow down your choices a lot. Warm colors are the reds, oranges and yellows that stand out on the wheel, while cold colors are blues, greens and purples.

Neutral colors are also popular choices for homes throughout the Twin Cities area. You can enjoy the benefits of having an off-white look,or shades of taupe, gray or brown. Using tones from a neutral palette will allow your home to fit in well with the other homes around you (regardless of their color) without standing out too much.

And don’t forget about white – it is a color, after all.  For many homes, white can be the best choice of all.

Eliminate Colors You Don’t Like

Once you’ve gone through the other tips, you can then eliminate the colors that you absolutely don’t like and don’t want on your home. By doing this, you’re drastically cutting down your options. It will make your choice easier.
