Tips for Winter Prepping Your Home Here in Minneapolis

Have you seen the forecast?  You really don’t have to watch the news to know that winter is already upon us here in the Minneapolis metro area.  The temps are dipping into the frigid zone and piles of snow are accumulating.  If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead properly.

That means blocking out as much cold as possible and preparing your home to handle all that winter brings along with it. Here are some helpful hints about how to get your home all ready for the coldest months of the year from our licensed Minnesota exterior home improvement company.

Prepare Your Roof

The first step in the process is to make sure that your roof is ready to handle what winter brings along with it. Go through your gutters and downspouts and remove any leaves, sticks and debris that may be lodged in place.  Debris build-up will prevent snow melt from flowing away from your roof.  Melted snow then re-freezes, contributing to ice dam formation.

Examine any flashing around the roof and verify that it isn’t loose anywhere. Also look at the condition of your shingles and make replacements to any missing or damaged sections as necessary to ensure that no moisture gets into your home this winter.  Note:  At this time of year we don’t recommend you get up on your roof and handle this yourself – get a Minnesota exterior remodeling contractor like Window Outfitters to take care of this.

Tackle Your Attic

The attic is a vital section of your home and something that absolutely must be winterized. Look over your attic for any air leaks into your home. Head up there on a chilly morning and feel for drafts. Seal all of them up using caulk, except for any attic ventilation.  Keeping your attic cool is important for your roof, but you don’t want that cold air seeping into the interior of your home.  Also take a good look at your insulation and ensure that it’s intact and working to keep your home nice and toasty.

Consider Air & Heat Loss Around Windows and Doors

The final step in any winter prep job is to go over all the windows and the doors of your home to be sure they are doing their job properly. Winterize any single pane windows using plasticwindow film if necessary, to help provide adequate insulation to your home.  You may want to consider having those energy-wasting windows replaced this winter.  If the windows themselves are wood and are in good shape, you can also have quality storm windows installed to add another layer of protection.

Test for air leaks.  Hold up a lit candle around the frames of your windows and your doors, and add weather stripping or caulk in any locations where the flame moves. If they are not up to standards, it might be time to call a licensed Minnesota replacement window and door company.

Getting a home all set for another Minnesota winter isn’t a simple task, and it’s one that takes some time, but these tips can help you. Here are some additional tips to help you get ready for the harsh winter ahead.
