What is the U-Value of a Window? What Does it Mean?

Minnesota homeowners shopping for new replacement windows probably know already that each window comes with a sticker (usually yellow) with all kinds of numbers and letters on them.  Each one is an indicator of the window’s performance in a specific category.

If you’re looking to reach your energy efficiency goals, then paying attention to the U-value of a window is important. By understanding what this is, you can better choose the windows that are going to provide you with the best outcome and the most energy efficiency in the end. (And by the way, the terms U-value and U-factor refer to the same thing; they are used interchangeably in the industry.)

Understanding Window U-Values

New windows have U-values and R-values assigned to them, so understanding both is important. The U is for the insulating factors of the window, while the R is for the energy efficiency of the windows. You want to check out both when choosing replacement windows in order to make an informed decision on which is going to be the best for your home overall.

How is the U-Factor Determined?

This is the overall energy efficiency of the window as a whole. This is determined by evaluating the entire window package – the assembly, the frame, the glazing on the window, the glass, the spacer and more. The higher the U-factor, the most energy efficient and insulating the window is going to be. Choose a window with a higher rating if you want something protective.

Does U-Factor Matter for Different Climates?

The answer is most definitely.  Always consider the local climate before choosing a window to purchase. Since we are in the upper Midwest region of this beautiful world, you know how cold it can become. This means choosing a window with a U- Factor of .30 or less is ideal since we have a colder climate than Florida. You can even go with a 35 rating if you so choose since this can be ideal when the weather warms up a bit.

Always make sure to check the factors of the window when it comes to shopping for the best one for your home. You want something that is not only going to look nice in your home but perform the best, as well.
