What Are STC Ratings For Sound-Reducing Windows?

Outdoor noises keeping you awake at night?  Regardless of whether you live by an airport or have a neighbor with an obnoxiously loud dog, we know just how much sound-reducing windows can help. However, different locations have different needs. A garbage truck trundling by before the alarm goes off is different than the noise of a nearby train yard, after all.

STC Ratings
A window’s ability to block noise is measured by what’s called an STC rating. “STC” stands for “Sound Transmission Class”, and is used in walls, doors and other building materials as well. It’s measured in decibels, and is tested by measuring how much noise is stopped on a scale of 18 different frequencies. The numbers are similar to those of the Ricter scale, in that as the number goes up, the effectiveness of the window does as well.

In the past, these types of windows were unattractive and bulky, but with ever improving window technology, they look as good as any other model available.

Window Ratings
The average single-pane window is usually rated between 26 and 28, but older windows are usually measured at only 25-20. This is because newer glass is usually thicker than what was used in the past, and the seals are usually better. However, double pane windows come in at around 24-29, but they can get up to a measurement of 38. Generally, the higher the STC rating, the more expensive the windows will be. However, if you live in a particularly noisy area, a good night’s rest may be worth the extra money.

Usually, dual-pane windows will do the trick, since they naturally block out so much noise, but sometime, special cases arise. If you need more soundproofing, like if you have a new baby or extremely sensitive ears, special sound-reducing windows may be worth investigating.
