What Type of Window Best Suits You?

There are many different window designs to choose from when you are ready to purchase new windows, as well as an extensive list of options and add-ons, but here is a quick overview of the basic choices.

Double Hung

The most popular type of window installed is the double-hung sash. This is the window that opens on the top and bottom; up and down. They combine the familiar style of window that most people enjoy looking through with the needed ventilation for practical use. In the double hung window, both the top and bottom sashes open and close, to allow the hot air to escape outside from the top, while allowing the cool air to blow in the bottom. These are found in most older homes.

Single Hung

Single-hung windows have the same traditional look as double hung, but they are less expensive than double hung, as they only open from the bottom. Since only the bottom sash moves, reaching is minimized. They are typically less expensive than double-hung windows but can still deliver great ventilation.  These windows are common in historic homes as well as garages.

Casement windows

Casement windows open out, like a door.  They are opened by turning a single handle typically placed at the bottom of the window. The higher end casement windows will include two locking mechanisms for greater security. Because casement windows are a single-sash design, they give a more unobstructed view.  They also provide greater air circulation because they catch and direct air passing the outside of the home. Often found in contemporary homes, casement windows are being widely accepted now in all styles of home, even traditional. Because there is no lifting  involved in opening them, they are great for hard-to-reach places like behind a bathtub or kitchen sink.

Awning windows

Awning windows operate on the same design as casement windows, except they open up rather than out.  They often can be used even in the rain because they channel water away.  Awning windows are often placed above or below other windows and doors, but they can also be a great light and ventilation solution in areas of limited space such as a basement.

Sliding windows

Sliding windows combine the design of casement and single-hung windows.  The sliding panel moves horizontally rather than vertically, so there is no reaching involved.  Sliders are a great solution in areas where there is not enough clearance for casements to open.

There are many other styles to choose from, including picture and greenhouse windows.  If you’re having trouble deciding what would work best for your home, let Window Outfitters help make the decision easier. We have the answers you need.  952-746-6661
