What are the Best Windows for Your St. Paul Home?

We get asked this question frequently: What are the best replacement windows for a home in St. Paul?

There is no easy answer, because no one window works for each home or homeowners.  The needs of the home and its owner are vastly different from house to house. But there are some questions to ask that can help you narrow down your choices to find what is best for YOU.

Knowing what windows are the best windows for your home is important when you’re considering replacing your old windows.  An important point is that you don’t have to use the same kind of windows you have right now – you can choose a different style or a different type of frame material.

With an almost unlimited number of window options to go with, it is available to select windows that are going to work with your home, your lifestyle, and your budget. The first step is to know the pros and cons of each, as well as considering these tips to help you select which windows would be best for you and your home.

Questions to Ask Yourself When Choosing St. Paul Replacement Windows

What’s the Weather Like in Your Neck of the Woods?

The weather in the area that you live in helps to determine which windows would be the best suited for your home. Take a look at your particular local area, because even around the Twin Cities the weather can vary.  Some areas are more hail prone than others.  Some spots get high winds.  Temperature ranges are different, too – even here in the metro area.

Choosing a window that has a terrific seal is important in a colder climate like Minnesota has.  The number of panes is important as well.  Single-pane windows used to be the standard, but now you should almost always go with double pane windows for extra insulation as well as air and water infiltration barriers.

And some types of window frame material hold up better in Minnesota’s harsh climate than others will.  Our weather is hard on exterior wood frames, so we usually recommend another type – such as fiberglass or vinyl.  If you love the look of wood frames inside, we have wood windows with maintenance-free exterior cladding to protect them.

What Direction Does Your Home Face?

If you have sun blasting into your home throughout the day, tinted windows might be the best option to go with when you want to protect your home from the heat of the sun. Windows with northern exposure could use a little extra winter protection by opting for a third pane of glass for windows on that side of your home.  And if one side of your home gets exposed to high winds, consider a style of window that seals tighter than others, such as a casement or slider.  You might even want windows on that side that don’t open.

There are other considerations to keep in mind when choosing the best windows for your home.  We offer quite a few different options, and we would be happy to sit down with you and discuss what you’re looking for in new windows for your home in St. Paul (or the rest of the Twin Cities metro area.).  We are a licensed Minnesota replacement window company, and our in-home consultations are always free and without obligation.
