Can I have Both Vinyl Siding and Paint?

When homeowners choose siding, the most popular one used in the United States is vinyl siding.

Why wouldn’t it be, with benefits such as almost no maintenance needed, affordable, and looks awesome? And to add to these benefits, vinyl siding is easy to repair, can be installed quickly, and has  colors available in a wide variety.

One reason somebody may choose something other than vinyl siding is looks, possibly because they want material that is natural, such as stucco, stone, or wood. However, all these materials are more costly than vinyl. Even though popularity goes to vinyl siding, for many people the top reason for their choice may be due to affordability.

Are You Looking For Change In Your Siding’s Color?

It is recommended by experts that vinyl siding be cleaned periodically so it remains looking good and mildew free. The best way for this to be done is with a bucket and brush. When power-washing is used you take a chance of water seeping behind your siding. In reality, a majority of homeowners seldom take on this task until needed, and in some cases this is never. But regular cleaning will help it retain its beauty.

Vinyl siding is durable and resistant. But to some, perhaps that’s a drawback because it lasts so long – long after they’ve tired of its color.  The color they chose so many years ago is no longer appealing. Just because you want a color change you may not be able to justify the expense of new siding.  So what can you do?

Should You Paint Vinyl Siding?

Despite popular belief, vinyl siding can be painted, if you use the right paint. It is still a recommendation with This Old House, not to paint over vinyl that is light colored with a darker one due to possible buckling of panels. Most dark paint colors will absorb heat, which causes the siding to distort.

This was true, but now Sherwin Williams offers VinylSafe® colors that are designed to stop this issue from happening. There are over 100 colors to choose from, such as earth tones (Bleached Clay, Sediment, Caramel Apple), and some off-whites (Tortilla, Cotton Sheets), greens (Hedgerow, Backyard), greys (Winter Months, Steam Ship), and some colors that border on blue (Nikko Blue, Stone Cold). They have custom color matching available as well. Their new paint is made to resist blistering and peeling, you will get a finish that is long-lasting, and nice and smooth.

This should also be good news for those who have considered vinyl siding but couldn’t find a color they liked.  You can still have all the durable protection of vinyl siding in just the right color – simply specify Sherwin Williams VinylSafe® when you talk to your contractor about painting.
