Can I Just Replace the Broken Glass in My Window?

What do you do if you have triple or double pane windows and the glass gets broken on one of the panes? You don’t want to replace that window because you just had it installed not too long ago. Unfortunately things like this happen.  You’re thinking, this is just one sheet of glass and you should be able to just replace the glass that is broken, shouldn’t you?

Replacement Window Glass Options

Ideally, the first thing you should do is contact the replacement window company who installed the window.

There are many options out there to replace the broken glass in the window. If the window is just cracked on one of the panes then the old window glass has to be removed and a new piece of glass fitted in its place. You should replace the old glass with the same type of glass in order to have the same effect. This might be a good option if your windows are in uninsulated spaces like an attic or unheated garage where the insulating value doesn’t matter.

Keep in mind that hardware stores that offer glass replacement won’t necessarily have in stock the kind of glass your window was manufactured from. If you need special glass then you may have to have it ordered from the manufacturer, which might cost a bit more but is generally more affordable than replacing the entire window.

If the window is still under the warranty, then you may want to contact the manufacturer to find out what to do. If you replace the glass before the warranty is up, it might void the warranty, so having an idea of how to go about this is ideal.

Should You Replace the Whole Window?

The window might need to be completely replaced if the window frame has been damaged as well. If the seal on the window is broken or if the frame is cracked, this might mean you need to have the whole window replaced. At the very least, a crack in the glass means most likely that the gas or air filling has leaked out, so even if you replace the broken glass, you can’t restore the insulating value the gas or air filling provided.  You may find that in the long run you’re better off just replacing the window.  We do have insert windows available so that you don’t have to pay the higher cost of a full-frame replacement.
