Causes of Minnesota Winter Damage Seen on Siding

exterior shot of one-story while sided house surrounded by snowMore snow and cold in the forecast for the Twin Cities through this weekend.  Just how much more can people (and their homes) here in the Minneapolis area put up with?   We know that many homeowners are concerned about possible exterior damage that this harsh winter may have produced on the exterior of their homes, especially to their siding.

Those high winds, ice, and snow definitely have the potential for causing problems. And it’s not just directly from the weather, since the severe cold may have sent rodents and other critters looking for some shelter beneath your siding.

Here are the top three causes of siding damage after Minnesota sees a winter storm in the area that help you determine whether to replace or repair your siding.

  • Cracks and breaks in vinyl siding may be caused by a build-up of snow against the house.  The weight of the snow puts pressure on the siding. Not only that, but the extreme temperature changes can also cause the siding to expand and contract, resulting in more cracks or warping.
  • Damage may be done by animals that might have tried to slip into the siding and find a warm place to spend their time. A number of siding products could be affected by rodents and other creatures. If you have wood siding, you might find gnawed areas. But the damage might be underneath your siding – it’s not always immediately visible. Mice don’t need a very large area go get in, so you want to make sure that they are not still in there before you get repairs made.
  • If you have wooden siding,  snow sitting against the house for longer periods might result in moisture being absorbed by the wood, so after the weather warms up, you might get rotted or cracked areas, and the paint or stain could be affected as well.

Repair or replace your siding after winter’s done its worst on your home?  That depends on a number of elements, including the age of your siding and the extent of the damage.  If you need help repairing, replacing or with any other siding issues, contact us here.  We are a licensed Minnesota siding installation contractor, and we install a number of quality siding products that are highly resistant to damage, winter or summer.  We serve the greater Minneapolis metro area.
