Choose a Siding Material That Stands Up to the Outside Elements in the Twin Cities

Living in Minnesota means dealing with often harsh weather conditions. That’s just the reality for those of us who have chosen to make our home here in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area or the rest of the state.   This time of year our climate provides a beautiful, yet cold, view our your windows. Is your home protected from winter’s weather?  A crucial place to check is your siding.  Along with your roof, it provides significant protection for your home.

What siding you have matters; not just any siding will do.  It is important to know which siding material is going to stand up to the test of the Minnesota cold and harsh winters.

Vinyl Siding Options

High-quality vinyl siding is a choice that so many homeowners go with because it is not only affordable but it is relatively durable. And if you choose a product like the insulated Craneboard® vinyl siding we install, you also get added energy efficiency.  But vinyl siding, no matter how well made,  might not stand up to the weather elements as well as some of the other available options. It can crack on impact on extremely low temperatures, and high winds can cause damage.  Moisture can often get underneath the siding, causing further problems.

Wood Siding

Genuine wood siding is often the choice of homeowners in this area, though we don’t recommend it.  Yes, real wood has a beauty and traditional appeal, but it requires a lot of work to keep it looking good and performing well.   It is not maintenance-free like vinyl might be. Additionally, the wood might not repel moisture as well as some of the other siding products, which might be a problem with severe storms, but snow and rain.  If you love the look of wood, we can suggest some alternatives that replicate the look of real wood without the drawbacks.

James Hardie® Fiber Cement Siding

Fiber cement siding from The James Hardie Company has been manufactured to keep cold, wind, and moisture out.  This is what makes it such a great choice for any homeowner. It also helps with insulation value, so during those long winter months, you have something that is helping you keep the heat inside your home and saving you money at the same time. The Hardie siding we install in the Minneapolis area is from their line that has been engineered specifically to stand up to the weather we live with.
