Choosing Lap Siding for Your Twin Cities Home Can Be a Beautiful Way to Go

If you’ve been shopping for replacement siding for your home, you probably already know the choices are almost limitless.  In addition to determining the material, the manufacturer, and the color, you also need to select a style.  You may be overwhelmed by the amount of options that you have. You can be sure to choose a siding style that works with you though, and what you want your home to look like. We think you should consider lap siding, regardless of the material or manufacturer you select.

Why lap siding?  Lap siding is a highly recommended siding product for those in the Minneapolis area. We suggest it to our customers not only because it is a beautiful addition to any home, but because it is a durable choice that will keep the snow, cold, and other harsh weather away from the inside of a house. Plus it has that traditional appeal that many homeowners just love.

What Exactly Is Lap Siding?

Lap siding is made from planks. These planks overlap each other in different configurations; hence the name. There are a couple different types of lap siding that you can choose

Horizontal: This is the most common choice to go with and it is also known as clapboard. It is installed from the bottom and then all the way up the side of the home. It also has thinner seams, so you don’t have to worry about visible seams once installed. A variation of this is Dutch lap siding. This resembles the traditional European style, where there is a decorative element at the top of the board, such as a groove or notch.

Shiplap: Installed with tongue and groove systems, this type of siding can be done on the inside or the outside of the home.  The siding pieces are tucked up right close to another, and the planks are usually narrower than clapboard or Dutch lap.

Lap Siding from Fiber Cement: Manufactured with the look of wood or vinyl siding, fiber cement siding not only looks nice on the outside of a home but performs well in addition to providing a beautiful appearance. Fiber cement siding is able to last up to 30 years longer than the other options but looks just as nice.  HardiePlank® lap siding from The James Hardie Company® is one of our top recommendations for Minnesota homes.

Is Lap Siding Good Choice for Minneapolis Homeowners?

If you want that seamless look that stands out, as well as many different color and texture options, then James Hardie lap siding would be an ideal siding choice to go with. Not only can you benefit from the stronger look and feel, but it provides protection around a home where it is needed the most.  And if you opt for the ColorPlus™ finish, you’ll have a gorgeous color that will last for years without needing painting. It has a terrific warranty against fading, cracking, or peeling, and it is available in a wide range of colors.
