Cleaning Vinyl Windows in the Spring Time

With the warm weather we’ve been having here in the Twin Cities, most homeowners have been tackling a common task – window cleaning.  Window frames can be made of a number of different materials, and how you clean each type varies slightly.  In this post we’ll focus on how to clean vinyl windows.

Vinyl windows are not only easy to clean but when you keep up on them, they last for a longer period of time which is ideal for all vinyl windows in a home. Even though you think you don’t need to clean them in the spring, there are many things that can happen when you don’t do so. The pollen, the streaks, the fingerprints and more can add up and your windows might not be as nice as they should be.

Exterior Vinyl Window Cleaning

One advantage of most of the vinyl replacement windows we sell is that they can be tilted inward so you can clean them from inside your home.  But you may have some windows such as a fixed or garden window where that isn’t possible. In that case you’ll have to clean the exterior surfaces by going outdoors.

Clean the outside of the windows using a mix of white vinegar and warm water together. You can even add a little lemon to the mix to give it a nice smell. Once you wipe them down with the solution, use a soft rag to go over the outside of the windows to keep them streak free. (Some people prefer to use a squeegee; in that case, follow up on the edges of the frames with the cloth to make sure you’ve mopped up any water run-off.)

Cleaning the Inside of the Vinyl Windows

Once you’ve cleaned the exterior of your windows, move to the insides.  The same thing happens here with the solution that you’ve mixed. Before taking your water solution to the glass, make sure to remove all the dirt and debris that is sitting in the cracks and crevices along the window sills and in the window frame. You don’t want to miss the window tracks, either. Then move on to cleaning the glass panes in the same manner as the exterior surfaces.  Make sure to wipe the window dry using a lint-free washcloth.

Clean windows not only look better but also work better.  Grime and gunk in the window tracks can interfere with ease of operation.

Try to clean the windows on an overcast day, since the sun will dry up the solution before you have a chance to actually clean the windows fully. This will leave streaks on the glass.  If the windows continuously look dirty or cloudy even after you’ve cleaned them, it may be time for new windows.  Clouding could indicate a failed seal.
