Do Minnesota Home Improvement Projects to Save Money on Homeowner’s Insurance Rates

Did you know you can actually save money on your homeowner’s insurance when you remodel and do certain home improvement projects? We’ve worked with lots of homeowners here in the Twin Cities area, and most of them are concerned about saving money wherever possible.  Yes, getting a good value for your project is important, but it’s a good idea to factor in long-term savings when you’re doing the math.

Usually, homeowners think about the resale value of the home, and how much more they can make their home worth if they were to choose a remodel project that helps. And energy-efficient projects are very popular because they can save money on utility costs.  However, there are actually many home improvement projects that can help cut your insurance premium costs.

While most of the projects that can save you money are pretty basic, such as updating the plumbing or the electrical,, they can save you money and as well as make your home safer. Adding new fire or carbon monoxide detectors can also bring a bit of a discount with them. Generators that keep things running should the power shut off is also a money saving extra with some insurance companies. It’s a good idea to check with your insurance agent to see what your company offers.  No discounts available?  Ask about alternative policies that may offer them.

The improvements do not have to stop at the inside of your home. They can extend to the outside. Those projects that make the home safer are ideal. Protective systems, with cameras or alarms, are ideal and can bring premiums down a bit more because of the added security they provide.  Tamper-proof window locks may also qualify.

Did you also know that James Hardie fiber cement siding is fire-resistant and adding this to the side of your home might also save you some money in your insurance? There are many things that help you get a discount and fire-resistant items are one of them!

Speak with your insurance company about the many discounts and savings that are available for you to make use of when you’re thinking about upgrading and updating items in your home. Saving cash is always a good thing!
