General Contractors Share Some of the Biggest Home Remodeling Mistakes

Home remodeling is something that needs to be done from time to time on every one, and despite the best intentions, mistakes do happen. General contractors like us have seen just about everything.  Some things are very minor and easily fixed, but others are major mistakes, which can be costly to both the homeowner and the contractor. Watch out for these issues when the time comes, and try to keep an open mind about everything when working with a general contractor.

Changing Your Mind Halfway Through the Job

This is seen more often than not. Close to 60% of contractors have had to revamp everything that they’ve been doing due to the homeowner changing the way they want things partway through the renovations. This not only is time consuming, but it is costly. It is the number one mistake that should be avoided at all costs.

Not Getting a Pre-Inspection Done

By going into the unknown with a project such as siding and then having to deal with what is found can be costly. This can actually raise the costs of the renovation project significantly. In order to create a more realistic approach to the job, it is important that you have this inspection done to know what you’re getting yourself into.  For example, if you’re seeing mold on your walls and you’re replacing your windows to cut down on moisture, what’s on the surface could be just the tip of the iceberg.  Pulling out the old windows could reveal wet insulation and rotten wood, which means those repairs need to be taken care of before the new windows can be put in.

Hiring a Contractor That is Not Licensed

If you’ve been tempted to save some money by hiring a nonlicensed contractor, we don’t recommend it.  When something on the job site goes wrong and the contractor is not licensed or insured, then your homeowner’s insurance may not not cover the damage.  This create a big mess that can be costly and means that your remodel is not being done any time soon.  You should know that under Minnesota law, any contractor working on your home must be licensed by the state, which means they have to show proof of insurance and be bonded.  Many contractors are willing to negotiate on the prices, so do not be afraid to speak with them regarding a lower price on the project. You might be surprised at what they come back with.

Here are some other costly mistakes you should avoid during the remodeling process.
