Have a Successful Minneapolis Area House Remodel with These Tips

Remodeling a home can be a stressful time for everyone who lives in the house. However, it does not have to be and it can run smoothly with some tips. By knowing the tips, you will not only plan out the entire remodel, but you will be prepared for anything that might happen during the remodel.

Here are some of the best tips to keep in mind when it comes to the remodeling happening in your home, so you are able to take advantage of the stress-free project.

Make Your Home Remodeling Project a Little Smoother With These Tips

Have a Budget: Having a budget that you’re committed to sticking to is the first thing that should be done. You need to  establish a figure so that you know where to stop, what you have to spend and what you can realistically accomplish with your renovation. The budget is one of the most important aspects of a home improvement project.

Let your home improvement contractor know from the start what your budget is.  Most contractors are very sensitive to the financial status of their customers and will suggest less expensive alternatives so that you can accomplish your goals without breaking the bank. We often encourage our customers on a tight budget to get creative with their replacement window choices.  For example, we will spec wood-clad windows for rooms like the living room that get a lot of traffic while suggesting less costly vinyl windows for areas like bedrooms and bathrooms. From the exterior these windows will look identical, but there is a major cost savings.

Plan Everything Out: Having a master plan is a must for anyone who embarks on home remodeling or improvement. Work with your contractor on a schedule and what will be done when, who is responsible for what, and the things you need to take care of before and after they are there. Get clear on the details. For example: who will move the furniture out of the way? Do you have pets who need to be boarded out for a couple of days?  With the right master plan, this can be done and you can check off every little thing as it gets done. It makes things easier when there is a plan and a path to follow.

Obtain the Right Permits: Permits are not always needed depending on the type of project that is being done. Your contractor should know whether the type of project you’re doing will require a permit and/or inspection. If a permit is required, no work can start until the permit has been issued.  Be very clear with your contractor who will pull the permit.

Do the Research on Your Contractor:  Never hire a home improvement company you know nothing about or that you have not talked to before. It’s important that you feel comfortable with a contractor before you hire them. Learn more about their company, how long they have been in business, how they can help, and if they are licensed and insured. Check their reviews, and ask if they have a list of references you can contact. One great resource is Guild Quality; contractors who use their services get follow-up surveys sent to their customers,  and the results get published.  We’re very proud to say we consistently earn their customer service award because of the feedback we get from ours.
