When you’re trying to decide on a siding choice for your home, it is important to look at all of the options available to you. The choices, however, can be overwhelming. You may have already looked into some basic siding materials and encountered lots of terms that may be unfamiliar. Some of the siding options you may never have even heard of before. Lap siding is one of those choices.
What Is Lap Siding?
Originally lap siding was wood siding that was installed with the strips overlapping one another (hence the name). It’s a traditional siding profile and currently the most popular one in the U.S. and in Europe.
(Some people may use the term ‘shiplap,’ but this is a different style. Shiplap siding – currently a very popular term – consists of siding planks that interlock rather than overlap.)
Lap siding pieces are flat, thin strips that are installed with the edge of one piece lying over the one below it. Originally lap siding was made of genuine wood, but now homeowners can have lap siding and it can be made from more than just wood. Vinyl and fiber cement are a couple of other options. Standard lap siding is also known as clapboard. There is another variant of lap siding called Dutch lap, which has a slightly different look to it.
