Window Safety Recommendations from Pella

Window safety is a crucial issue – nearly 5,000 children are treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments each year for injuries sustained from falling out of windows. Being a leader in the window manufacturing business, Pella Corporation has partnered with the National Safety Council, through its Window Safety Task Force.  In response to this vitally important issue, Pella offers these important tips to help improve home safety:

•Keep children’s play in the middle of the room and away from windows, doors and balconies to help minimize an accidental fall or injury.

•Keep windows closed and locked when not in use. When you do open a window for ventilation, open the upper sash on a double-hung window so that children won’t be tempted to climb out.

•Keep furniture like beds and dressers away from windows. Furniture placed under a window can create an platform to climb and the potential to fall.

•Windows provide a secondary means of escape from a burning home, so come up with an escape plan and make sure your children understand it.

•When performing repairs or cleaning, make sure windows and doors are not jammed, painted or nailed shut, so they can open for a quick escape in an emergency. If they don’t, consider replacement, because windows and doors can be replaced; lives can’t.

•Choose windows that tilt in for cleaning to make cleaning easier. This will also eliminate the need to climb ladders that add risk.

•If you are adding window guards or window fall prevention devices, properly install “approved guards” that include a quick-release mechanism that meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards.

•Window treatments with traditional cords can contribute to childhood injuries. For added protection, choose blinds and shades with no room-side cords.  Pella’s Designer Series® windows feature blinds, shades or decorative panels between glass panes.  Some blinds manufactureres offer models with slide levers rather than cords.
