What Is a Picture Window and Where Do I Use It?

If you’ve been looking into replacement windows for your home, you’re probably finding out that your options are endless. Most likely you’re not only trying to sort though all the information regarding different window frame materials and glass coatings but also seeking to find answers to some of the basic questions like these:

“What type of window goes where?” Or, “Which types of windows work well on their own and which should be paired with other window styles?”

Start With the Basics When Choosing Window Styles

These are good questions, and this is where professional advice from a licensed Minnesota window contractor, like Window Outfitters, comes in.

There are a number of window styles, and in this post we’ll address the purpose and place for picture windows.

What is a picture window?

It is a large inoperable window used to frame a particular scenic view, hence the name.  The picture window can be an amazing option for  nearly any place where you have both a large amount of wall space and a beautiful view.

The Pros and Cons of Picture Windows

Due to their fixed nature, picture windows have their advantages and their disadvantages. Looking on the bright side, they let in a lot of natural light and are very energy efficient since there are no crevices for cold air to slip in. They also make a great choice for those with seasonal allergies who want to keep the outside air where it belongs – outside.

On the downside, they don’t allow for any ventilation, so they need to be paired with another window type if you enjoy a fresh breezes. Double hung windows are the most common choice for complementing a picture window, although casements work well, too.

Finding suitable window treatments for picture windows can be difficult, especially if they are particularly large. We’ve found that vertical blinds are a good solution for picture windows of any size. You could also consider custom-made treatments that can be either closed or drawn away depending on the amount of light you desire.
