Should You Choose Horizontal or Vertical Siding for Your Minnesota Home?

If we say ‘siding’ you probably automatically picture horizontal pieces, right?  But many homeowners we work with opt for something a little different – vertical siding.

When it comes to siding for your home here in the Minneapolis area, there are almost countless options in horizontal siding options.  However, did you know that vertical siding is actually a popular thing?

(The home in the photo shown here – courtesy of The James Hardie Company – has both horizontal and vertical siding installed.)

More and more homeowners are considering vertical siding for their Minnesota homes and you can be one of them. There’s a distinctive beauty that comes with having siding installed vertically. It’s a non-traditional option that those who are looking for a more modern appeal find attractive.  And there are some good reasons for choosing this style over a horizontal profile.

Why Install Vertical Siding?

Stylish Design

Add a little stylish extra something to the outside of your home when you choose to go with a vertical siding. You can even mix and match the two, like in the home above. Some like to use stone siding for a part of their home and then go with vertical vinyl for the rest. There are plenty of options that a homeowner can choose from when it comes to making their own design for the exterior of their home.  Mixing up siding profiles is one way to get a custom look that lets your home stand out from all the others on the block.

Durable Solutions

If you want something that is going to protect your home and what’s inside, then the right siding is going to make all the difference. Both quality vertical and horizontal siding will provide durability against the outside weather elements. However, it is important to note that horizontal siding takes a bit more damage, especially when it comes to water. Vertical siding is generally much easier to clean, using a pressure washer or hose. More care needs to be taken with horizontal siding, because this design profile is more prone to water leakage underneath the strips. That’s also something to keep in mind with weather, because here in the Twin Cities we tend to get frequent storms that have rain driven by high winds.

Cost and Resale Values

The cost is going to make a huge difference on which one you decide to go with. Vertical siding does cost a bit extra because it takes a bit more to install it to the side of the home. And not all siding contractors have adequate experience in vertical siding installation. (The techniques required are slightly different.) However, it is also something that can last quite some time and take less of a beating because of the way it is installed.

You also want to consider whether or not your home is going to stand out enough or too much when adding the siding. Your resale value might go up a bit but you need to know if it is going to go up enough to really make a difference. One thing to keep in mind is the overall feel of your neighborhood.  If your home is tucked in among traditional looking homes, if you opt for a siding that varies greatly from those around you, your home might not just stand out – it could look out of place, which could be a drawback.
