Should You Choose Wood or Fiberglass Windows for Your Minnesota Home? Part 1

There are so many questions we encounter at our MN window company that have to deal with our fiberglass and wood windows, how they are the same and how they are different. Knowing these differences will help you make the best decision for the home that you own.

The Materials

Both wood and fiberglass are able to insulate the home and are energy-efficient choices when it comes to replacing windows throughout your home. Wood has been used for quite some time and continues to do its job well. It is able to insulate and provide beautiful aesthetics, plus it is versatile. Fiberglass is a material that is new on the market. It does provide insulation – even better than wood can. Unlike how wood rots, warps, contracts and expands, fiberglass will not when the temperature or moisture changes.

Fiberglass wins this battle of the materials.

Energy-Efficiency

Both wood and fiberglass are energy-efficient and have similar characteristics when it comes to insulating or otherwise known as R-values. However, fiberglass tends to be a bit more insulating compared to wood due to the ability to resist any type of expanding and warping that wood would go through. Fiberglass can last longer in the long term.

Fiberglass wins yet another battle, the one of energy-efficiency.

Aesthetics

There are many different features and styles that can be installed with a Mpls window contractor, depending on your tastes and home style. This allows you more flexibility when it comes to designing.  Fiberglass windows tend to be more aesthetically pleasing, but when choosing a wood-clad fiberglass window you can have the best of both worlds. You can have the aesthetics of wood, but the durability of fiberglass.

It is a tie on aesthetics for both providing beautiful features.

In our next post – Part 2 of this series – you’ll  find out even more comparisons on wood and fiberglass windows and the difference between the two.
