Shutters for your Windows Provide a Whole New Look

If you’re in the market for a totally different look for your home, have you considered adding shutters to your windows?  It used to be that nearly all homes came with shutters.  Shutters originally provided a much-needed function in that they kept out the weather and protected the window glass in case of high windstorms, hail, etc.  Nowadays while modern windows don’t necessarily need the protection of shutters, they can add a charming touch to the look of your home.  If you’re replacing your windows, consider adding shutters in the process.

There are basically four types of shutters available to the homeowner:  composite, fiberglass, vinyl, and wood. They each have their own benefits, depending on where you live and what you want to achieve, so it is important to speak with your local replacement window and door representative to find out what would work best for you.

If you want a quality shutter with no maintenance and you are not opposed to paying more, composite shutters would be the right choice for you.. Fiberglass shutters are a great option for homeowners who reside in a region that frequently suffer from extreme weather because they can endure a wide variety of conditions. These shutters have the color running all the way through the material, so you won’t experience the fading that is normally seen in vinyl shutters. While vinyl shutters are the most popular, typically because they are the least expensive.  But vinyl shutters will fade, warp, come loose and tend to age much quicker than the other materials.  But they are great if you’re on a tight budget.  Vinyl shutters also require no maintenance.  Wood shutters on the other hand, will work in almost any situation, and look great for years to come. The only real drawback is that they will need to be painted every few years. It is an affordable, traditional look that works with just about any home style.

One thing to keep in mind if you’re adding shutters to your home is to check with your homeowner’s association or historical district if that applies to your home.  There are most likely requirements relating to shutters.
