The Right Window and Door Hardware Can Reduce Break-In Threat

Did you know that about a third of residential burglars gain access through the front door?  A pick-resistant lockset with a deadbolt (kept locked of course) could have reduced that number substantially.  Other popular access points for burglars are the garage door and upstairs windows.  Many people are in the habit of leaving upstairs windows unlocked, but that’s not a very good idea.  Side entry doors and first-floor windows that are easily reachable follow front doors as the most used burglar entry, but these can be secured as well.

The right locks, hardware, and motion detector lights can all be put into place inexpensively and give you peace of mind knowing your home is more secure from a break-in.  Here are some good tips from This Old House to help you stop a prowler in his tracks.  If your home isn’t an easy entry, he’s likely to move on to find one that is.

When you replace your windows and doors to make your home more comfortable and attractive, make sure you’re taking the other steps necessary to keep it secure as well.
