Types of Energy-Efficient Windows

Windows add character and can alter the feel of a home. Arched windows have a distinctly different feel to them than picture windows, for example. As charming as they can be, for most homeowners replacement windows are a large investment.  Inexpensive windows are available, but they don’t last as long and don’t deliver the energy savings that more expensive energy-efficient windows can.  Energy costs are rising just like everything else, and one way to counteract that is to install energy efficient windows.

Low-Emittance
One type of window that saves energy by reflecting ultraviolet rays from the sun away from the home is the low-e window. This type of window is coated with a microscopic layer of metallic or metal oxide. That glaze is what controls how much solar energy is let into the home without obstructing the view.

The different levels of reflection, called gains, available in these windows are made to accommodate various climates. Low solar gain is made for warm climates, while moderate or high gain is made for cool climates.

Double-Pane or Triple-Pane, Gas-Filled Windows
Science h-s discovered that slower-moving gases, like argon or krypton, make great insulating materials. That’s why they’re injected in many double- or triple pane windows today. They work by reducing heat transference between inside and outside the home. These windows used to be filled with regular air or nitrogen.

Better Frames
The glass in windows isn’t the only part that has seen improvements in insulation. The frames themselves have also been made more efficient. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, frames are ideal for the highest R values. They are easier to take care of than wood frames and resist heat better than aluminum frames. Fiberglass frames are also available, and some of them have the highest R values, but they are more expensive than PVC or other options. They’re not very widely available yet, either.

All of these techniques and increasing insulation combined to make a highly energy-efficient window. This, in turn, lowers energy costs and time spent maintaining them.

When it comes to replacing your windows, the wide range of options and material choices doesn’t have to be intimidating when you’ve got a window professional on your side.  Free consultations are available from Window Outfitters – we’ll help you find the right window solution for you.
