Uninsulated or Insulated – Which is Better for Your Siding?

Here in Minneapolis the weather can be hard on our homes, so selecting the right siding for your home is very important.

When choosing the most practical siding option for your home, you need to consider the many options that are out there. Whether you want to go with something insulated or uninsulated, first get the facts so you can make an informed decision.

First, keep in mind that more insulation is not always better, contrary to what you might think.

R-values are used to determine the effectiveness of any insulation or insulating product. The lower the values, the less insulation you’ll receive. The higher, the more insulation on a home. However, the higher values are not always recommended.  As the values go up, so do the costs, but you won’t necessarily be getting benefits that correspond to the increased cost.

Why Choose an Insulated Siding Option

Insulated siding can help retain your  home’s heat in the severe Minnesota winters (and the A/C in our hot summers), as well as provide yourself with the look and feel you’d want from a siding option. Through the use of Crane insulated siding, you can recoup up to half of the costs you’re losing within your home by having this extra padding added.

However, insulated vinyl siding is also more expensive so you’ll want to account for the additional costs that are related to installing the siding. Keep in mind, you’ll recoup these installation costs by seeing the savings with time on your energy bills.  This matters most if you intend to stay in your home for a number of years.  If you’re planning on putting it on the market in the near future, it might not be worth the extra cost.

While some builders and other siding contractors might not recommend a high amount of R-value insulation, it is still something that should be considered based on the type of home that you own. While the additional cost of well-insulated might not be ideal for some, it can be a great option when the cold Minnesota winters hit.  And it’s definitely something to consider if the northern side of your house is exposed to those blasting winter winds or the southern side doesn’t have much for summer shade.
