What Types of Minneapolis Replacement Window Installation Are Available?

Replacement window installation is something that many Twin Cities homeowners will face at some point. No matter whether you’ve got an older or historic home or you just bought a newly-constructed one, for one reason or another, those windows are going to need to be replaced.

The Two Basic Types of Replacement Window Installations

There are two types of window installations that are done in the home – pocket installation and full-frame installation. We can help you determine which option is the best to go with depending on the replacement windows you’ve chosen and your home. These factors are:

  • The exterior materials or siding on the home
  • The budget
  • Time restrictions put on the installation
  • The age of the home
  • What condition the home is in
  • If there is any damage done to the window frame

Full frame installation is when the entire window, including the frame, is removed. This is type of installation is needed when the frame of the window is no longer good and needs to be taken out and replaced along with the glass. If the old frames have deteriorated or in any way have warped or shifted, it’s usually necessary to put in a full-frame replacement window.  That’s also the case if you’re selecting a different style of window.

Pocket installation is when just the window and sash are replaced and not the frame. The existing frame remains in place. What is called an ‘insert window’ is installed in the old frame.  It’s a much quicker (and usually less expensive) process because the old frame doesn’t have to be removed.  Pocket installation is preferred if the home’s exterior is stucco, brick, or other masonry due the difficulty of removing old frames set in these materials as well as the potential for damaging the area surrounding the window frame.
