Your Minneapolis Replacement Window Checklist

Yes, it’s snowing in the Minneapolis area…again. But never fear, this nasty weather has got to come to an end soon, and then it will be time to open up your windows to let in the fresh spring air and sunshine. If the thought of opening your windows makes you cringe because you’re tired of how they work or how poorly they perform, perhaps it’s time to replace those old windows. And we can help – we are THE replacement window company for the Twin Cities.

Your first step once you’ve decided it’s time for new windows is to choose a replacement window company to work with. You’re making an investment in your home with new windows, so having a contractor you can trust to get the job done right matters.

Regardless of the style or type or even brand of window you’re thinking about, working with a licensed replacement window contractor is very important.  There are many things you’ll need to determine, and you have so many options that you’ll find it’s helpful to have a window professional to guide you through the process.

But it helps to do a little homework ahead of time. We’ve put together this checklist to help you discuss your options with one of our customer service reps.

What Style Window?

There are many different styles of windows available for you to choose one. And you don’t have to go with the same style windows you have right now.  You can choose the one that appeals the most to you. Here are some common window styles options that are popular with many homeowners:

  • Bay windows
  • Bow windows
  • Double hung windows
  • Sliding windows
  • Casement windows
  • Picture windows
  • Awning windows

Most of the window manufacturers we work with offer these basic window styles. But there are also specialty shape or custom window styles as well.

The Window Frame Material

Window frames are available in a number of different materials, so in addition to the window style you need to select what type of frames you want.   Vinyl and fiberglass are popular options, and windows are available in wood as well as wood interiors with exterior maintenance-free cladding. You don’t need to select the same type frame for all the windows in your home, either.  We often recommend clad windows with real wood interiors for rooms that get a lot of daytime use, such as a living room. More economical vinyl windows would be used in bedrooms and bathrooms. But we can help you select the right combination so the difference isn’t obvious to the eye.

How Well Do Those Replacement Windows Perform?

You need to make sure that the windows that you put into the home are going to perform well in a number of things. You can read reviews of window brands, but you can also get great information from the rating sticker on the window. You’ll want to evaluate:

  • Resistance to UV rays (especially important for windows that get a lot of full sun, such as southern exposure
  • Energy efficiency ratings
  • Glass type and coatings on the glass
  • Sound resistance
  • Ease of operation

The design and aesthetics of the windows are completely up to you and what you feel the best using. However, looking into all of these things together will be helpful in selecting the right windows for your personal taste, your home, and your budget.

Here are some questions you should also ask when contemplating replacing the windows in your home.
