Choosing Single or Double Hung Windows

If you decide to go out and buy new windows for your home, you’ll be confronted with the choice between single hung and double hung windows.  If you’ve looked around the Minneapolis area, you know these two window types are the most popular.  That’s especially true with older or historic homes.  The double hung window – originally invented in England – still remains the most popular window in the U.S.

It can be difficult to decide on which is going to be best for your home and your budget, especially when you consider that single hung windows are generally more affordable than double hung windows. Here’s a breakdown of the benefits of each type of window. Hopefully it will help you make the right decision.

Comparing Double and Single Hung Windows

Want Easy Cleaning Windows?   Nobody likes cleaning windows, but some window styles are easier to clean than others.  If you have the choice between cleaning single or double hung windows, you’re almost always going to choose the double hung windows. That’s because they open up easily and provide you plenty of access space to reach out and clean up both the top and bottom of your windows.  We install double hung windows whose frames tilt inside, which makes cleaning even easier.

With single hung windows you pretty much have to go outside to finish cleaning the part of your window that’s covered when you open it up.

Double Hung Windows Give You More Options.  With double hung windows you have more options about how you can have your windows open or closed. It’s easy to open just the top portion of the window to make it inaccessible to children. If you want to change the way that ventilation works in a room of your home you can open the top of some windows and the bottom of others. You are free to pick the way that your windows open, which is pretty nice. Single hung windows open the same way every time – from the bottom up only.  The top portion is fixed and can’t be opened.

Single Hung Windows Are More Affordable.  Single hung windows are often significantly more affordable than double hung. That’s a big deal when you’re on a limited budget and you’re trying to pick out the highest quality that you can. While getting double hung windows is more convenient and they are often more desirable in general, sometimes it makes sense to get single hung instead. For instance, if you can afford a high quality single hung window, but not a decent double hung window, it often makes the most sense to go ahead with the single hung window.  They also make sense in areas where you know you won’t be opening the top portion, like above a kitchen sink or another area where the top section would be hard to reach.

Now that you know the benefits of both types of windows, take a moment to really consider which makes the most sense to you. Still can’t decide?  We install both, so get in touch with a qualified replacement window contractor right here at Window Outfitters, to get an estimate and help you figure out exactly which windows are the best option for your home.  We are THE replacement window company for the Minneapolis area.
