Choosing the Right Exterior Door Materials for Minneapolis Homes

When homeowners think about exterior remodeling, their first thoughts are often things like siding and even replacement windows.  But have you considered the your exterior doors (entry doors, service doors, and patio doors)?  They are very vital to home security as well as energy efficiency.  The second-most common source of heat and cooling loss is via exterior door openings, and most home burglaries occur through an entry door.

So if your exterior doors don’t work or fit well, perhaps it’s time to consider replacing them.

When you go to replace your storm, entry, or patio doors, you need to make sure that you use the right materials.  Those doors should protect your home as well as make it more comfortable inside.    Plus they should look good.

There are a variety of exterior door materials to choose from. Having an idea of what is available can truly make things easier for you when the time comes to replace those exterior doors with something that offers all of the benefits you need and want.

Steel Exterior Doors

Over half of the exterior doors on the market are made of steel. (This includes not only entry doors but also storm doors.) This is because steel is strong, yet beautiful option for doors.  Steel resists outside elements (weather and home invaders), and quality steel doors are constructed in a manner that provides good insulation for the door opening.   Plus, unlike wood, steel doors require very little upkeep.

Wood Doors

Genuine wood doors are beautiful and usually have their own unique look and feel to them, offering a traditional appeal that homeowners are sometimes looking for. You can paint it and stain it and change the look and feel of it. However, wood doors are not the most energy efficient in comparison to other materials, and they require frequent refinishing.

Minneapolis weather can be hard on wood doors exposed to the elements. So we recommend either having storm doors installed over them or choosing a wood door that has exterior cladding to protect it. We install Integrity fiberglass doors from Marvin that have real wood interiors.

Fiberglass Doors

These hybrids in the exterior door market are one of the best choices to go with. You can get all of the benefits of steel or wood doors, but often with a lower price tag. Fiberglass is durable and holds up well to our weather. It can crack under extreme pressure, but it is an affordable way to get security and comfort inside the home, while also offering the beauty that the home needs on the outside. Fiberglass doors are available in a style that replicates genuine wood, so you get the look of real wood without any of the drawbacks.

If you’re looking for an exterior door, then you should consider checking out the different options we have here. We can recommend the best door for your home based on your needs and wants. Then we can come and install it for you.
