Consider the Material Your New Door is Made From

When was the last time you took a good, hard look at the front door to your home?  Your front door not only protects what is inside but also says something about your home. When someone drives by, walks by or comes over to visit, the door to your home lets them know the type of person you are. Front doors are made from various materials, and depending on which one speaks to you, you can have a wide selection to choose from. Each one offers different pros and cons, and each one has its own look.

Let’s explore some different entry door materials:

  • Solid Wood – This is a natural insulating material. It has a timeless, classic look to it which really makes it stand out on any home. It comes in a variety of styles, and it has a thick, durable feel to it which can be heavy, allowing it offer safe protection for the inside of your home.  However, with the climate we experience here in the Minneapolis area, we recommend a storm door to protect your front door if your entry isn’t covered, especially on the northern exposure.
  • Steel – More protective than the other options, it provides a simple appeal to the outside of your home. It insulates the inside of the home well, and can provide a comfortable place for everyone to live.  Steel doors can be ordered with wood grain finish so they have the look of real wood without the maintenance requirements.
  • Fiberglass – More versatile than the other options since it comes in many different looks and colors, it is one of the more popular choices when trying to make a fashion statement on your home. It provides protection and insulation like the other two and can even mimic the look of wood if you like that style best.

Choosing the right door for your home starts with you, but if you have the help that is needed behind you, you shouldn’t have a problem choosing which is best for you to go with. Consider the safety value, insulation factors and look you’re considering and then go from there.
