Deciding on the Right Replacement Windows for Your St. Paul or Minneapolis Home

Having new replacement windows installed can make a big difference on cooling and heating bills and function for homes here in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.

Deciding on the best windows to have put in your home isn’t easy to do, though. With so many different options to choose from, it takes time and consideration to choose the right window for your needs. As you’re evaluating new windows, here are some things to take into account.

What to Consider When Choosing New Minnesota Replacement Windows

Consider the Different Styles

The first step to choosing the right window is to consider all the most popular window styles and whether or not they are a good fit for your needs. For instance, double hung windows are easy to clean and are a very common style of window. Sliders move horizontally and are good for short but wide walls, and they are an excellent choice for older homeowners because they’re easy to operate. Casement windows (those that crank out) are extremely popular. Or you may have an area that you just need light in and not ventilation – that’s where a fixed window, perhaps in a special shape, works well.

Windows that extend out from the side of your home can give you both more light as well as function. Garden windows are excellent for growing herbs, and and have a larger base that’s excellent to use as a shelf. Bay windows make a stronger statement while offering the same large shelf that garden windows offer. Bow windows are just like bay windows, but with more gradual curves for a nice soft and round look.

Each of these window types is popular and worth considering. Some will work better in your particular room than others, and that’s the important consideration for you to make.

Consider Energy Efficiency

Another consideration that you have to make is whether or not the windows you’re looking at are energy efficient. The most efficient windows are worth investing in because they will save you money on your utility bills each and every month of the year. More energy efficient windows are cost more, but they will result in a more comfortable room and slightly more affordable utilities that will ultimately save you a bit of money over time.  As home buyers are looking for overall energy efficiency in a home, having those windows could also mean you’d get more for your home when you sell it.

Consider the Window Frame Material

The actual material of the replacement window frame is another key consideration. Most people choose between fiberglass, vinyl, and wood. Vinyl is the most affordable but generally the least durable. Wood requires more maintenance than fiberglass but offers a warmer look. Fiberglass windows are efficient, durable and a decent value. They don’t offer that same classic, traditional look that wood windows do though.  Then there are wood windows with maintenance-free cladding on the exterior that allow you to have the best of both worlds.

Stock Windows or Custom Constructed?

The final consideration you have to make is whether you want to go with stock windows from a factory, or if you want custom windows built specifically for your space. Custom windows fit better, they often look better and they’re exceptionally good for irregular spaces. If you have a pretty standard room that you want to put windows in, you’ll often be able to find a stock window that will fit the space well and that will be more affordable than a custom solution is.

Ultimately it’s up to you to decide what features you value the most when picking out windows.  The right windows can even change the room looks or feels –  find out more here.
