Do You Know How to Clean Your James Hardie® Siding?

Ah, spring…and spring cleaning here in the Minneapolis area.  Is the exterior of your home on your list? Your siding needs to be cleaned just like the rest of the home.  And if your siding is James Hardie® fiber cement, you can use this information to do it right.

It is not surprising that a number of homeowners do not know how to properly clean their James Hardie® siding; do you? This siding product differs from other alternatives, and its care is different, too.

James Hardie® siding is built to last, and it can look its best year after year, even after some serious storms and severe weather that we’re used to in the Twin Cities. Yes, it’s durable, but regular cleaning can help keep it looking even better.

Cleaning James Hardie Siding Is Easy to Do!

It is important to hose down the outside of the siding at least once a year, but twice a year can be beneficial.

DO NOT use a pressure or power washer on Hardie siding, though.  The James Hardie Company does not recommend this cleaning method because it can be potentially dangerous due to the high pressure that comes from the hose. A better method is to use a medium bristle, non-metal brush to scrub away any dirt and debris along with the use of a garden hose for rinsing.

Removing Dust and Dirt

You will want to use a soft cloth or brush to remove dust and dirt that might be built up. Pay special attention to the spots where planks overlap.  A hose then can be used to wash the dust and debris you get loose.

Removing Oil or Grease

To remove harder build-up on your siding, you will want to use a mild detergent or soap and a soft cloth. You can then softly wipe away any gunk and use a hose to rinse clean.

Removing Mold and Mildew

Sometimes mold and mildew end up on siding. You can use a soft cloth, hose, and a cleaner that is made specifically for the mold and mildew.

Your James Hardie fiber cement siding can last for some time to come if you take good care of it. Speak with our siding professionals today to find out how we can provide the help you need and want for siding installation and repair here in the Twin Cities area.  We are proud to install Hardie siding and trim products.
