Energy Efficient Windows for Minnesota Homes: Top Questions Asked and Answers Given

Even if you’ve read our two earlier posts on window ratings, you may still have some questions as  you’re evaluating your window choices.  We often get questions from our customers and here are the most common ones.

1. I have seen Low-E on glass before; what does this mean?

Low-E is a process that glass manufacturers do to put a silver coating over the glass itself. This works much like a mirror towards the sun to reflect the rays back in the other direction. This also means that those rays to not come in your home and can save you fading on your rugs, curtains, and furniture.

2. I have seen the R-Value before, but I am not sure what it means.

This the rating given to the window based on the energy performance of that specific window. When it comes to wood or vinyl, the higher this value is, the more you will save on your energy bill since the higher numbers mean they are higher energy efficiency wise.

3. What exactly is a U-Value?

These values are a lot like R-Values, but they have differences as well. The U-Value is for the entire window itself and not just the outside framing of the window. The U-Value is also backwards on a scale, meaning that the lower numbers are more useful than the higher ones when it comes to energy savings. U-Value is used for how much heat is lost through the window, and the R-Value is how much heat is retained in the window.

4. Do I need to get new EnergyStar windows to replace my old ones?

Homeowners have different reasons for installing new windows.  Sometimes windows are replaced due to their lack of functionality, but they can also be replaced for more aesthetic appeal as well. New windows cannot do you wrong when it comes to saving on your heating and cooling expenses; energy-efficient windows such as those with the EnergyStar rating actually give you more savings when it comes to your energy bill and giving your home a nice new look.  You don’t have to choose EnergyStar windows, but this mark is an indication of their energy-saving features.

5. What exactly is argon-filled gas?   I have seen it a lot with new windows.

When the time comes to replace windows, you should think about those new windows that have argon gas inside them. Argon is more dense than any oxygen that is usually put inside it windows.  Argon filling can reduce heat transfer rates throughout the home, which increases your energy savings.

If you’re thinking about replacing your old windows for new energy efficient windows,  talk to the experts at Window Outfitters to find out more of what they are able to do for you and get your home working and functioning more efficient.
