How Do I Know When It is Time to Replace My Windows in Minneapolis?

Do you know whether your windows are in good shape?  When it comes to evaluating the windows throughout your Minneapolis home, there are some key sections you should pay attention to in order to find out if they should be replaced.  Sometimes a simple repair is needed, but often that’s not the answer.  Here are some areas to take a look at.

Signs Your Windows Need to Be Replaced

  • Drafts – big or small – can become a problem in the home. You will pay more for heating or cooling if the windows are letting air in and out. There may be gaps in the frame due to the wood warping over time from condensation. Weather stripping can be a temporary fix, but replacing the windows is be a permanent one.
  • Are they difficult to operate?  Problems with opening or closing are often due to the age of the windows, especially if they have wood frames.  By replacing the windows, you will no longer have this problem. If you have a double or single hung window and they are not staying up when you put them up – it is time to replace them. Not only is this a health hazard, but a security one as well.
  • Condensation can be a large problem when it comes to a double or triple pane window. Sometimes this is due to excess moisture in the house, but the seals in the window could be faulty and allow moisture to seep through between the panes. In this case, the insulation the windows might provide will have no effect on energy efficiency.  Condensation not only makes your windows unattractive, it prevents being able to see through them.
  • Sharp pieces of cracked glass are definitely indications that your windows need help.  If there is any exposed glass that is broken, it can be very dangerous.  It also means the window is less efficient at keeping the warm and cold air in. You can patch the glass for a quick fix that is not very energy-efficient, but you should invest in new windows for the long term.
  • Are your energy bills rising? If you made some changes throughout the home but still have high energy bills, then it might be time to switch the windows. Having windows that are not energy-efficient means you’re not able to keep hot or cold air in (or out) when it is needed.

Replacing your windows can lower your energy costs and increase the value of your home, while also enhancing your security level.
