Interview with President Bob Davis: Why ProVia Steel Entry Doors Are the Best for Twin Cities Homes

You must often hear us discuss Minnesota replacement windows, but replacement exterior doors are also a specialty of ours.  Even though entry doors are not part of our name, they definitely are a major part of our business.  Why?  Because the second most prominent area of heat or cooling loss in a home is through exterior doors.  That means energy-efficient entry doors should be a priority for you if you’re looking to cut down on your heating and cooling bills.

Another reason for the popularity of entry door replacement for homeowners here in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area is value.  Did you know that replacing your front door with steel or fiberglass is the top home improvement in terms of value if you’re interested in maximum return on your investment?  Real estate pros will tell you if you can only do one thing, make it a new front door.

And finally, steel entry doors are strong and incredibly durable.  They hold up well to Minnesota weather, and they can’t be kicked in like a wood or vinyl door can.

With all this in mind, we talked recently with our company president, Bob Davis, about why ProVia doors are our #1 recommendation when our customers ask about entry doors.  In this interview segment he shares on their steel exterior doors, and in an upcoming post he’ll discuss their fiberglass exterior doors.

Interviewer:  If a homeowner is looking for a steel entry door, what do you recommend?

Bob:  With steel exterior door manufacturers, our primary supplier is ProVia, and that’s really the company we stick with. They make a very high-end 20-gauge steel entry door.

Interviewer:  Can you go into the quality of construction of those doors and the thickness of the metal?  Is that what makes their construction so good on a steel door?

Bob:  ProVia manufactures a 20-gauge steel door that is reinforced in areas with 10-gauge gussets.  It is the best constructed steel entry door in the business.  Most manufacturers use a much thinner steel – 24 gauge, 26 gauge.  They dent easily and they will rust.

The quality of the construction on the ProVia door is highlighted in the video we’re sharing with this article.  The video shows how they manufacture the product, and how they treat it with galvanization before they paint it. The paint process they use is the same one that’s used in the Mercedes car line, so you know it has to be good.  It’s a very high-end paint process and they use several coats of clear coat.  It’s just an excellent door from that standpoint.

Interviewer:  Is there anything else that makes these ProVia steel exterior doors special from your perspective?

Bob:  Yes, and this has to do with their doors that have glass in them. When you put windows or glass in entry doors, usually you’ll see either the screws or the plugs over the screws where they put the framing over the glass.  ProVia has perfected a process where they have plugless trim, so the trim on their doors looks like it would on a wood door; you don’t see any of the fixing areas.  It gives you a more beautiful, finished look.
